About the Burgundy wine region
The name Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) comes from the Burundians, an ancient Germanic people originating in Bornholm who settled in the area during the early Middle Ages.
Burgundy’s best red and white wines set the gold standard for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the top of their game, Burgundy wines are acknowledged as some of the most aromatically complex, seductive and silky on the globe. This thanks in part to their indescribable melding of fruits, flowers, minerals, and earth, as well as their facility in projecting an authoritative flavor sans excess weight.
Unfortunately, for many, the best Burgundies are only produced in limited numbers. Burgundy wines can spell trouble for the non-connoisseur—there are still many examples of less than stellar, overpriced bottles for sale. This fact is due to the nature of the region’s vineyard ownership. An individual, small premier cru vineyard may be subdivided amongst a dozen or more owners. These owners may produce everything from plonk to exceptional wines—all at the same price—depending on the skills of the producer.
The Côte d'Or, or "golden slope," is the in heart of Burgundy and is home to the region’s most famous, and pricey, wines. This 30-mile-long ribbon of vineyards is where all the Grand Cru vineyards (except for Chablis Grand Cru) are found. The Côte d'Or lies just south of Dijon extending to Chagny. The greater Burgundy region also envelopes Chablis to the northern extreme, while the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais regions are located to the south of the Côte d'Or. Beaujolais, at the extreme southern end of the Burgundy region, almost touches the outreaches of Lyon.
This focused, light-to-medium bodied red offers a medley of steeped black cherry, tangy blackberry and apricot notes flanked with tea, cedar and anise elements. A vivid hint of rosewater defines the long finish. Drink now...
A full, ripe wine, this is rich in white fruits, but balanced by bright acidity. Produced in a vineyard close to Buxy, it has a taut edge, plenty of honey and lemon flavors, and a touch of toast. It's developing well, and...
A straightforward chardonnay with sliced cooked apples, honey and straw. Medium-bodied with pleasant fruit and a fresh finish. Drink now.
The 2022 Fleurie has a beautifully defined nose with wonderful mineralité like Foillard's other cuvées, surfeited with energy. There’s real purity and panache. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of mulberry on the...
(90-91 points) 10 plots representing three of their 8.5ha. Deep purple with a lighter rim. A darker, denser fruit, less explosive than the Bourgogne. A few blackcurrants and bilberries, not quite squeezed till the pips...
90+ The 2021 old vine bottling of Nuits St. Georges was showing beautifully at the time of my visit. The wine delivers a beautiful bouquet of red and black cherries, gamebird, dark soil tones, a touch of nutskin...
Well-marked by new oak, this red delivers spicy cherry, raspberry, boysenberry and floral aromas and flavors. Turns sleek and elegant by the finish, with vibrant acidity and fine harmony. Though balanced, this will need...
A perfumed and much more floral-suffused nose speaks of white peach, lemon rind and grilled nuts. The succulent, intense and stony middle weight flavors possess a taut muscularity before terminating in a bitter lemon...
Fine bright crimson purple with class and some charm. There is a welcome freshness to this wine, and a sense of precision. Not quite the length of Bruno Clair’s Clos St-Jacques, more red fruit, a little acidity, this is...
The 2015 Moulin a Vent la Roche contains 40% whole bunch fruit and is aged in 30% new oak. It comes from 70-year-old vines cropped at 24 hectoliters per hectare. This is much more controlled and sophisticated on the nose...
The 2017 Monthélie bursts with aromas of spicy red berry fruit, cherries and sweet soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with a lively core of fruit, fine-boned structure and...
92+ The 2015 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru, derived from young vines in the Musigny, offers up a lovely bouquet of black cherry, summer fruits, caramelized citrus peel and subtle espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is...
A suave, vibrant red hallmarked by haunting scents of rose, wild strawberry, raspberry, sandalwood and graphite. Linear and bordering on racy, thanks to the vivid acidity, with refined tannins. Silky and balanced, this...
Fragrant, fluid and seductive for the silky texture, with cherry, floral, sandalwood and oak spice aromas and flavors. Well-structured yet deftly balanced, this feels effortless and graceful overall. Reveals licorice and...
While the nose is compositionally similar to the Bressandes, it's not quite as fresh though it is slightly spicier. There is both good refinement and power to the delicious, delineated and subtly mineral-inflected flavors...
The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a fragrant, perfumed and classier bouquet than Hudelot-Baillet's Bonnes-Mares: well-defined with clever use of stems. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned...
Restrained and distinctly cool aromas include a plethora of floral nuances that add elegance to the white orchard fruit, citrus and soft hazelnut wisps. The incredibly low yields are in evidence as the mouthfeel of the...
