Leading off the three Châteauneuf Du Papes, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from more sandy soils just across the road from the estate. It always shares more stylistic similarities with the Réserve and is more opulent, sexy, and fruit loaded compared to the Hauts-Lieux cuvée. This 2017 is spectacular, offering loads of black fruits, black licorice, ground herbs, violets, and some obvious loamy soil and mineral-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, expansive, and multi-dimensional, this is another singular wine from Jean-Paul Daumen that tastes like the essence of this stunning terroir.

Spicy floral, ripe, red fruits, pepper, jam, licorice and black raspberries open the perfume. On the palate, the wine is soft, with freshness and a juicy, peppery kirsch end note. There is good concentration of flavor, fruit and freshness from start to finish. This is quietly packed with cassis, fresh plum and raspberry reduction notes, carried by a chalky minerality that acts as spine while notes of anise, applewood and warm earth create a backdrop on the finish. Tightly wound, but the finishing kick of fruit is impressive, and bodes well for cellaring. Best from 2024 through 2038. 1,200 cases made, 300 cases imported. — JM

Vivid ruby. A complex, spice-accented bouquet displays cherry cola, cassis and floral oil scents. Expressive, appealingly sweet red and dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are complemented by hints of baking spices and smoky minerals. Shows fine definition and spicy lift on a long, gently tannic finish that strongly echoes the floral note.

Sandy soils have produced a bright, open and dynamic wine with aromas of damson, plum and a touch of liquorice. It's medium-bodied with really powerful, piercing acidity, and shows more liquorice on the palate along with some internal sweetness and super-bright fruits. The alcohol is a little raised but it's a very clean, vivid and tense wine.
