A red with a layered, velvety texture, showing blackberry and black-olive character, together with some iodine and graphite. Full-bodied and rich with lots of fruit and chewy tannins. Savory. 50% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 10% petit verdot. Needs two or three years to soften.

A forest floor of berries, brambles, wild herbs and soil on the nose. Mixed berries, both macerated and fresh, on the palate play beautifully against anise and licorice, then dark chocolate and coffee, with a seemingly infinite finish held up by tightly coiled but refined tannins. — Danielle Callegari

This is lush, yet dense and lively, offering black cherry, blackberry and black currant fruit, shaded by mineral, cedar and spice elements. Firms up by the finish, echoing fruit, mineral and spice accents, with fine length. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. From a warm vintage, the Tenuta Sette Ponti 2020 Oreno (a blend of certified organic Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot) is very rich and fleshed out, and definitely softer compared to the 2019 vintage before it. This wine shows lots of savory fruit and velvety concentration with blackberry preserves and baked cherry. Oreno awards you with a very generous expression from Tuscany that can be enjoyed in the near- or medium-term.- ML

The 2020 Guidalberto is a gorgeous, classy wine. Less opulent than it can be, the 2020 impresses with its energy and drive. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, cedar and pipe tobacco all take shape in this super-attractive, mid-weight offering from Tenuta San Guido. There's a bit more Merlot in the 2020, but Guidalberto is increasingly made from lots that don't make it into Sassicaia, which explains the style of recent vintages. This is a terrific showing, especially considering the recent bottling. It's a fine relative value in Bolgheri's high-rent district. Lovely detail on the nose, a sweet floral scent with touches of dried herbs, coffee and mint. Structured and fleshy, this has weight and power straight away with the focus more on the tannins and concentration of crunchy fruit than overt liveliness at this point. A serious, contemplative wine with lots going on. I love the intensity here, this is confident with clear direction and energy. I also love the salty, smoked stone taste at the end giving nuance and sense of place. Detailed and expressive, great winemaking on show here, and there is lots to get stuck into. Ageing 18 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux then in bottle for one year before being released.

Old vines Bordeaux blend from the Moretti Cuseri family, owners also of Orma. Delicious, with emphasis on bright fruits and a cheerful swagger, plenty of liquorice, tapendade and fennel, black cherry and cassis, high aromatics and super-powered through the mid palate with a touch of heat on the finish. This wine was first made with the 1999 vintage, but is being sold through the Bordeaux system for the first time with this vintage. 12 months in bottle following ageing before release.
