This Toscana IGT from Chianti Classico stalwart Fonterutoli is a blend of 80% tonneaux-aged Sangiovese and 20% barrique-aged Cabernet Sauvignon, both matured for 18 months. Tobacco and cedar-laced black fruit aromas lead to a bright and concentrated palate full of focused red and black fruits, showing great balance and structure for long ageing. A finish of herbal bitters and pomegranate lends depth and interest to this youthful, value-for-money red.

Vibrant aromatics, fragrant baked spice, rich raspberry fruits, crushed roses, mandarin peel, smoked earth, brushed leather, this has this beautiful concentration to it, but also precision, character, sappy texure, the warm welcome of Tuscany. Ageing 18 months in small French oak barrels for the Cabernet Sauvignon, larger sized for the Sangiovese, 70% new, plus three months in concrete tanks before release.

The 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is bright and punchy, with terrific freshness and tons of nuance. Plum, pomegranate, spice, new leather and blood orange are front and center. The nose balances the peppery, sanguine smokiness of grilled meat with a succulent swirl of black cherries and chocolate. The Mazzei 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli comes from a vintage that saw good rainfall and a long hot summer that ensured easy fruit ripening thanks to ample water reserves. Additional rainfall occurred in June and September to help reduce water stress and resulted in grapes with thick skins and well-ripened phenols. You taste that here, and there is some grittiness to the tannins with very soft fruit flavors and bold extraction.
