A dense, muscular red, delivering dark cherry and blackberry fruit shaded by mint, tar, toasty oak, earth, iron and tobacco. This has tannins that are present, if covered by the bright fruit and fleshy texture, which exert themselves on the long, spice- and iron-inflected aftertaste. Grivot owns 1.86ha in Quatorze Journaux, along the Route Nationale. There are three different soil types in this large parcel and some portions are declassified in wet years. In a warm, dry year like 2019, the results are delightful, with bright red fruits and a silky, subtle texture. Lighter than the offerings from Vosne but also very worthy.

Dense dark purple. Tarrily toasty, this is on the sweaty side. Much more interesting on the palate, with the fruit more in dark raspberry mode, backed by a refreshing line of acidity, and though the alcohol is present it is not out of kilter with the fruit concentration. I think there is potential here if the wine throws off its current more awkward side.

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru employs quite a lot of new oak on the nose, but it seems simpatico with the dark berry fruit and the underlying mineralité that reveals itself with aeration. The palate is slightly candied on the entry, dense and more modern/oakier in style vis-à-vis its peers, and there is some VA that is marring the finish. It's a Clos Vougeot that needs to "calm down". This was magnificent from barrel, but in bottle, I have a couple of question marks. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. - Neal Martin, September 2023
