This wine was added to the output of Château Léoville Las Cases alongside Clos de Marquis from the 2007 vintage. It is technically the ‘true’ second wine as Clos de Marquis comes from entirely separate vines. Not an inexpensive way into classified Bordeaux, but this vintage is one of the most beautiful second wines I’ve ever tasted. All the tannic aplomb of its big brother, but with a ripe, sweet juiciness that means it should be approachable within the next few years. Just over 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, compared to 80% in Léoville Las Cases. (Drink between 2016-2028)

Sleek and well-rendered, this features an iron note that runs from start to finish, along with ganache, charcoal, pastis and crushed plum and blackberry fruit. Not as dense as the top examples, but offers textbook typicity, solid drive and a long finish. Best from 2014 through 2024. 8,333 cases made. — JM

Forest floor, leaves, cedar, cassis and fresh cherry notes work well with the polished sweet, mélange of cherries and wild strawberry that washes over your palate. You can drink this now, or give it a few years of age. This is an outstanding value Bordeaux wine.
