Plenty of dried-cherry and cranberry character here, but also candied lemon and angelica. Pretty powerful and highly structured, this is light-years removed from the world of pretty, light rosés. Bold and very mineral finish that’s as austere as it is exciting. A blend of 50% chardonnay with 44% pinot noir and 6% pinot meunier, based on the 2015 vintage. Disgorged on February 1st, 2021. The NV Champagne Zero Brut Nature Rosé reveals a pale and youthful, pink-tinged color and is a blend of half Chardonnay, along with 44% Pinot Noir, and 6% Meunier, predominantly from the 2017 vintage. Floral and inviting, the nose opens to aromas of wild berries, pastry cream, rhubarb, and grapefruit. The palate is medium-bodied and inviting, with a rounded mousse, a silky, mineral-inflected texture, and citrus notes through its balanced finish. It offers a nice balance of tension and ripeness and should continue to drink well over the coming 8-10 years. Disgorged in January 2023 with zero dosage. - Audrey Frick

92+ The current release of the Tarlant family’s Brut Nature “Zero” Rosé is from the base year of 2015. It was aged just under five and a half years sur latte and disgorged in September of 2021. The cépages this year is fifty percent chardonnay, forty-four percent pinot noir and six percent pinot meunier. The wine is a beautiful salmon color and offers up a deep, complex and expressive bouquet of rhubarb, blood orange, rye bread, a lovely base of soil tones, dried rose petals and a touch of brown spice in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and complex, with lovely depth at the core, superb mineral drive, elegant mousse, nicely mellowing acids and a long, classy and impeccably balanced finish. I so admire the Tarlant family’s commitment to aging their non-dosé bottlings for long enough prior to release to allow the acids to mellow out and the wine to start to drink with generosity. Fine, fine juice.

The NV Brut Rosé Nature Zero is terrific. Here the addition of still red Pinot juice adds textural richness to play off the tension of the non-dosage style. Crushed red berry fruit, chalk, mint, rose petal and white flowers lend brilliance to this ethereal yet layered Rosé from Tarlant. Bright saline accents punctuate the finish.
