Pinot noir accounts for 75 percent of this blend, the lovely coppery color pointed up by red wine from pinot noir grown in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The wine feels honest, settling from heady to brisk as the deep, plummy savor extends into a mineral finish. It lasts with the gentle delicacy of pinot noir.

A graceful Champagne, with a chalky underpinning and lacy texture supporting ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit, star anise, apple blossom and salted almond notes. A bright pink hue, the NV Champagne Royal Reserve Brut Rosé is also based on the 2019 vintage, with all the red wine in the blend coming from the Clos des Goisses, with 7.5% red wine, 27% reserve wine. Made from 69% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay, and a splash of Meunier, it reveals a perfume of fresh rose petals, apricots, and croissants. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with juicy fruit, a pillowy mousse, and a silky texture. It has a fine tannin structure, with notes of fresh raspberry fruit throughout as well as a hint of tangerine and delicate, sweet salinity. It retains good balance and freshness with just a hint of warmth on the finish. This is a seductive rosé offering a lot of pleasure. Drink 2023-2033. The latest rendition of the NV Brut Rosé Royale Réserve is based on the 2019 vintage and was disgorged in March 2023 with nine grams per liter. Revealing a fresh, fruity bouquet with aromas of strawberries, rose petals, menthol and pastry, it’s medium to full-bodied, vinous and generous with a gourmand mid-palate and a long, saline finish. - Yohan Castaing

Based on the 2019 vintage with 27% of reserve wines kept in oak barrels, the Royale Reserve Brut Rosé is a 69% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Meunier assemblage rosé with around 7% still Pinot Noir that includes a small percentage of this is saignée wine taken off at the beginning of the red fermentation. Salmon pink colored with a velvety mousse, it fills the glass with flamboyant, fruity and fresh aromas of raspberries, red currant, quince, dried blood orange slices and hints of honey. Medium-bodied, the palate has a creamy texture rounded out with succulent, red fruit and buoyed by vivacious, balancing acid that leads to a joyful, lingering finish. Moderately fruity and nicely yeasty aromas include those of cherry, raspberry, cranberry and soft citrus wisps. The delicious saliva-inducing flavors are supported by a moderately firm and reasonably refined mousse, all wrapped in toasty medium dry finish. This isn't particularly complex but it's inviting and satisfying in its fashion.

The NV Rosé Royale Réserve, base 2018, is terrific. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petals, blood orange, tangerine oil and cinnamon are all beautifully lifted. Bright and transparent, with terrific energy, the Royale Réserve Rosé is exceptionally pretty in 2018. The blend is 73% Pinot Noir, 24% Chardonnay and 3% Meunier with 18% reserve wines. Based on the 2021 vintage and disgorged in November 2024, Philipponnat’s newly released NV Brut Rosé—the successor to the Rosé Royale Réserve—derives its delicate color and vivid red-fruit character from a blend that incorporates 6% still red wine and a rosé de saignée component sourced from ripe grapes grown in Clos des Goisses and Les Riceys. It soars from the glass with notes of wild berries, brioche, cherry and honeysuckle. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a generous core of fruit, succulent yet vibrant acidity and a perfumed, delicately grapefruit-inflected finish. Its dosage of nine grams per liter isn’t immediately apparent when tasting begins, though as the wine slightly warms, the sweetness becomes less flattering to its overall impression. The assemblage consists of 68% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Meunier. - Kristaps Karklins
