The NV (2018) Extra-Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles is superb. It strikes me as the most complete of the Chardonnay lieux-dits this year. Tangerine oil, dried flowers, chamomile and lightly honeyed overtones all meld together. Like all the 2018s, the Carelles in on the lighter, more gracious side, and yet its complexity and pedigree are both evident. What a gorgeous Champagne. From a steep south-facing vineyard and a ‘reserve perpetual’ spanning 2010-2003 inclusive. Has some almost greener herbal elements with lime essence and pepper-dusted grapefruit. It has a powerful and enriched texture on the palate with some gently bitter caramelised peach fruits and some smoky and woody notes. Long mineral finish, drink now. - Nick Stock

Based on the 2016 vintage and disgorged early this year, Selosse's new NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru Les Carelles delivers aromas of saffron, honeyed peaches, fenugreek, white flowers and pastry. Medium to full-bodied, rich and seamless, it's satiny and elegant, with an enveloping core of fruit and an attractively chalky finish. It's more extroverted than its 2015 predecessor. - William Kelley
