Hints of vanilla, brioche and spun honey enrich flavors of baked white peach and persimmon, lemon curd, and anise in this plush Champagne, honed by vibrant acidity. The Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Blancs NV is a small production non-vintage wine (less than 10K cases produced) focused on expressing Champagne’s diverse Chardonnay terroirs. The blend is based on 2016 and has 45-50% Cotes des Blancs fruit (mostly Vertus and Oger) with the rest sourced from villages east to south. Much like the Brut Reserve the blend includes 25-30% of reserve wines, though only younger reserves up to 10 years old. It has a delicate, mineral-laced nose with creamy lemon curd and acacia honey notes. The light to medium-bodied palate is very textural with a soft, fine mousse enlivened by assertive acidity that adds considerable freshness to the long, saline finish. The NV Champagne Blanc De Blancs Brut reveals a bright yellow hue and is floral and perfumed with aromas of honeysuckle, poached pear, parmesan, and powdery chalk. Medium-framed, it has an elegant and silky texture, a pillowing mousse, a clean and tapered finish. This cuvée was relaunched in 2018, and it has held true to my previous tastings, offering an understated, finessed feel with a good deal of charm. Drink now or over the next 6-8 years. (91+ points) Produced on the foundation of the 2020 harvest and complemented by 30% reserve wines, Charles Heidsieck’s NV Blanc de Blancs (laid in chalk cellars in 2021) was disgorged at the end of 2023 with a dosage of nine grams per liter. The blend draws fruit from the Montagne de Reims and Montgueux (as base wines), the Sézannais and Côte des Blancs and incorporates 10% to 15% barrel-fermented components. The nose evokes nashi pear, candied lemon peel and peach, mingling with pastry, rosemary oil and subtle roasted nuances. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, ample and textural, with a charming fruit core enlivened by bright acidity and carried to a chalk-inflected finish. As demonstrated by its earlier renditions, this cuvée is poised to gain further complexity with a few additional years of post-disgorgement maturation. - Kristaps Karklins
