Coming from the gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, the 2023 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot, brought up all in new barrels. This deep purple-hued beauty offers pure cassis and subtle red and blue fruits intermixed with graphite, violets, and freshly sharpened pencil nuances. Medium to full-bodied, it has a layered, beautifully balanced mouthfeel that carries ripe, polished tannins, ample mid-palate depth, integrated acidity, and a gorgeous finish. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou needs a little swirling to unlock expressive notes of warm cassis, juicy blackberries, and boysenberry preserve, leading to hints of chocolate mint, graphite, and lilacs. The light- to medium-bodied palate is light on its feet, with energetic black fruit and minerally accents, framed by firm, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long and fragrant. Seductive! 98+ The 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a jewel of wine. Soaring aromatics are immediately captivating. A rush of red/purplish fruit, mocha, new leather and well-judged oak build as the 2023 shows off its vertical structure and total class. There's plenty of Ducru opulence, but everything is in the right place. I must admit, I like the lower-alcohol vintages at Ducru quite a bit, as there is less oak extraction, which in turn yields wines of exquisite finesse and class. A highlight. - Antonio Galloni

Supple and velvety, full of energy, power, concentration but the most lovely pure juicy core. Definitely less concentrated than some Ducrus but this has character and poise and manages to get across a lot of flavour. Feels finessed with total balance between the elements. Already feels approachable too which is so nice. Totally delicious. Plenty of texture, sinewy muscles and a base of cool, gravel, chalk, flint and wet stone. Will age really well. Chewy, juicy, round, powerful and fun. But still with that finessed touch.

Extremely perfumed, with violets, lavender, black currants, blueberries and light orange peel. Hints of lead pencil. It's medium-bodied and so poised, showing ultrafine, polished tannins. Seductive and caressing, with a long, seamless finish. A blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon and 15% merlot. So delicious now but better after 2018. Drink or hold. James Suckling Senior Editor

(TWI 97-97+ points) Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou opens with classic great Cabernet notes of blackcurrants, mulberries, and ripe plums leading to a perfume of lilacs, lavender, and pencil shavings with a touch of cardamom. The light to medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound and so, so elegant, with a firm backbone of grainy tannins and wonderful tension giving definition to the black and red berry layers, finishing long and fragrant. This is more structured than most Médoc wines this year and very impressive. The blend is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot, with pH 3.70 and TPI 89. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown
