As often at this domaine, the wine starts quietly then builds in intensity, really kicking on without changing out of the red fruit register. Substantial.

Though this red is oaky, there's also a whole-cluster feel to it, with sandalwood and vegetal aromas synching with flavors of black currant and blackberry. Iron and sweet baking spices chime in as this plays out on the lingering aftertaste, showing fine balance. Best from 2026 through 2045. 494 cases made, 76 cases imported.

(92-94 points) This is also aromatically quite floral in character with its blend of purple fruit, earth and anise wisps. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delineated and powerful larger-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are dense but fine on the balanced and youthfully austere finale. This offers fine development potential and is a wine that will need at least some patience.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a ripe, opulent bouquet, though it is missing the delineation of its peers. It's a little sultry, although there is commendable purity. This improves and coheres in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine delineation, gentle grip and a little wood tannin towards the finish, but that should assimilate with time. There's an attractive spiciness. This wine presents a ripe and generous nose with aromas of freshly peeled apple skin, white strawberry, baked rhubarb, and white peppercorn. It has intense, youthful tannins that pucker the mouth. On the palate, dark plum and black cherry persist through the mid-palate, followed by notes of green peppercorn, beef bouillon, and stone. Cellar through 2035+. — Anna-Christina Cabrales
