The 2019 Montefalco Sagrantino Colle Alle Macchie is darkly floral and classic in profile, with a burst of crushed ashen stones and smoke giving way to dried black cherries, dusty sage and cocoa. This is a total pleasure on the palate, soothingly ripe yet energetic with crisp wild berry fruits and mineral tones, all energized by a core of vibrant acidity. It finishes dramatically long yet incredibly fresh, leaving hints of licorice and a balsamic tinge over a bed of fine tannins. Taut and fresh, with flavors of ripe cherry, plum skin and pomegranate fruit wrapped tightly around the core of firm, fine-grained tannins, showing notes of graphite, anise, dried thyme and lavender. Savory hints of tobacco and leather emerge on the lively, spiced finish. Though lovely today with decanting, this will shine with some time in the cellar.
