This parcel was acquired by Dr. Mugneret in 1971 and lies on a steep slope above Vignes Rondes, on the northern edge of Nuits-St-Georges, near Vosne. Because the soil is very thin, the vines can suffer in drought years, but in 2019 the results were lovely, with an intense, sweet aroma of dark plums and a rich, velvety texture on the palate. There is a core of tannin and structure here that will help it to age for years to come.

(92-94 points) 22 hl/ha old vines on the hillside. 14.4%. Glowing imperial purple. Huge weight of fruit here, with some red raspberry notes backing the darker fruit. This does successfully fill out the mouth and finishes very well. There is some warmth at the back but the fruit wins.

Deeper pitched than the Vosne-Romanée La Colombière, the 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots unwinds in the glass with scents of cassis, plums and raspberries mingled with top notes of rose petals, espresso roast and rich spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with an ample core of fruit and ripe, powdery tannins. It's an especially charming rendition of this immensely consistent cuvée.- WK

(92-94 points) The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has the most expressive aromatics of the three wines that I tasted from the appellation at Domaine Mugneret. Only half the number of barrels were produced this year due to very small bunch weight. This has vibrant red berry fruit, wild strawberry, shaved black truffle and light crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite taut and more linear than the Les Vignes Rondes, and certainly with greater tension toward the saline finish.
