The tiny production 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Juline is an equal split of Grenache and Syrah that’s fermented and aged all in new French oak. While new oak could tend to overpower a more moderately concentrated vintage like 2018, this is nicely done and leads with beautiful black raspberry and cassis fruit as well as notes of toasted bread, vanilla bean, dried flowers, and a kiss of candied orange. With terrific purity, full-bodied richness, and silky tannins, it’s already drinking brilliantly yet should evolve for 10-15 years. I love its balance and purity, and it’s up with the top wines in the vintage.

A dark, winey style, with lots of fig, plum and blackberry paste flavors layered together, with sweet tobacco, licorice snap and warm earth accents filling in. Packed but defined, with a graphite spine through the finish and well-embedded acidity stretching it all out. Best from 2024 through 2038. 200 cases made, 40 cases imported. — JM

Dark violet. Deeply perfumed, oak-spiced aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, cherry cola and candied flowers expand with aeration. Palate-coating black raspberry, cherry-vanilla and boysenberry flavors show impressive energy for their depth. Finishes extremely long and smoky, with solid, spicy thrust, repeating florality and youthfully chewy tannins that add shape and final grip. -- Josh Raynolds

A 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, barrel-fermented and then matured in barriques for 20 months, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Juline is named for Jules and Pauline, the next Autard generation. It's inky in hue, with smoky nuances but better integration of oak than in the Cuvée la Cote Ronde and immensely concentrated notes of ripe black cherries, plums and salted licorice. Full-bodied and intense, it's particularly tannic, but could use a couple of years to just mellow a bit—for the volume to go from, say, 11 down to 9 or so.- JC
