(91-92 points) Some dark-berry and mineral character with stones as well. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Shows structure and style. Second wine of Haut-Batailley.

jebdunnuck.com, March 2021

First created in 2017, the Château Haut-Batailley Verso is the new second wine of this estate, which is now run by the talented team at Lynch-Bages. The 2018 Château Haut-Batailley Verso has a complex, nuanced...

Decanter, November 2020

A little austere and closed right now, not giving much, but there are plenty of firm tannins and well-defined blackberry fruits, held in place by a tannic frame that has Pauillac character. Feels subdued but with...

janeanson.com, November 2023

Very different in character from the 2017, clear vintage variation, this is full of sweet sandalwood, damson berry fruit, powerful tannic grip, a touch of heat from the alcohol. This can be drunk now if you like rich...

Vinous, March 2021

The 2018 Verso is laced with copious blue/black fruits, spice, new leather, smoke and lavender. Élevage has softened some of the angular contours that were present en primeur. Overall, though, Verso remains a bit on the...

Chateau Haut-Batailley is a Left Bank Bordeaux wine property that was originally part of Chateau Batailley, a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification. Jointly owned by Francis and Marcel Borie, they divided the estate between them in 1942.

Marcel took the Batailley half, including the chateau. The smaller part went to Francis who purchased additional vineyard land from Chateau Duhart-Milon to increase the size of his Haut Batailley vineyards. Now managed by Francois-Xavier Borie, Chateau Haut-Batailley is part of the Borie family of estates that includes Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou and Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

The 22 hectares of Chateau Haut-Batailley are on a gently sloping outcrop at the southern edge of Pauillac. They are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc on exceptional soils of deep gravel and alluvial stones. This ensures excellent drainage of rainwater and encourages deep roots. The average age of the vines is 35 years old.

In 2005, Francois-Xavier Borie began a major program of construction, building a modern vat house, new harvest facilities and a bottling room, all in harmony with the pre-existing decor.
