As is so often the case chez Mugneret, the 2015 Vignes Rondes is more structured and reserved in personality than the Chaignots. The bouquet is deep and very elegant this year, offering up a youthful blend of red and black cherries, gamebird, lovely soil tones, a bit of bonfire, nutskin and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite primary, with a rock solid core, chewy tannins, good acids and impressive length and grip on the nicely balanced finish. Unlike the Chaignots, which might tempt one to open it early, the Vignes Rondes will demand a solid decade’s worth of bottle age to blossom. However, it will be lovely once it is ready.
