Few producers do Pinot Noir-dominated NV as well as Philipponnat, the latest edition showcasing ripe apricot, orange citrus and pale raspberry fruit backed by precise lemon peel energy and subtle resonance from a 34% oak-aged perpetual reserve. Hugely expressive, yet without an inch of fat, this is another irresistible NV: 67% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay, 2% Meunier, largely from the Grande Vallée de la Marne and Vertus, based on 2019.

Based on the 2019 vintage with 34% of solera reserve wines that were aged in cask, the Philipponnat Royale Reserve Brut NV is a blend of 67% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Meunier aged for three years, was disgorged in January 2023 and finished with an eight gram per liter dosage. Incredibly fresh and fragrant aromas of lemon cream wafers, quince, raspberry coulis, orange marmalade and butter sable biscuits flow into an elegant, light to medium-bodied palate revealing fresh orchard fruits and chalk amid a shimmering acid brightness and a wonderfully fine, precise finish. - Sarah Mayo

Both the NV Champagne Royal Reserve Brut and the Non Dose are the same wines but with different dosages and disgorgements. (This wine was disgorged in March and the Non Dose in January.) Tasted side by side at the estate, both of these two wines pour a bright straw color and are based around the 2020 vintage, which was a warm, dry year. On the nose, the Royal Reserve Brut offers attractive, fresh aromas of ripe raspberries, white peach, tangerine, fresh flowers, and delicate pastry dough. Medium to full-bodied, it has the hallmark intensity one comes to expect from the house and is ripe, fruity, and approachable, with a chalky texture, a spicy mousse, and a good deal of length on the palate. Readers should take note that Philipponnat is going to change the name of this cuvée in 2025 to Reserve Perpetuelle, although the wine will stay the same in terms of process, but the new name is meant to put the emphasis on the extraordinary reserve wine of the house. 8 grams per liter dosage. - Audrey Frick

A baseline of chalky minerality supports juicy pear and white cherry fruit, lemon peel and pickled ginger alongside rich accents of crystallized honey and biscuit in this sleek and creamy Champagne. The new release of Philipponnat “Royale Réserve” non-vintage Brut is from the base year of 2019. The wine’s cépages this year is sixty-seven percent pinot noir, thirty-one percent chardonnay and two percent pinot meunier, with fully a third of the blend being reserve wines from the solera Philipponnat has created for this bottling. Only first-pressed juice was used for the wine, with only a portion of the vins clairs going through full malolactic. It was disgorged in January of 2023 after three years aging sur latte and finished with a dosage of eight grams per liter. The wine is quite refined on the nose, wafting from the glass in a lovely blend of apple, peach, warm bread, chalky soil tones, gentle smokiness, dried flowers and a nice touch of citrus zest in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and nicely balanced, with fine depth at the core, elegant mousse, bright acids and lovely focus on the long and complex finish. This is very good non-vintage Brut.

Based on the 2020 vintage and disgorged in January 2024 with a dosage of eight grams per liter, the NV Brut Royale Réserve exudes aromas of pear, spring flowers, exotic fruits and spices. Medium to full-bodied, round and elegant, it's perfectly balanced with bright acids and a mouthwatering, long finish. This classic blend, which includes 65% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 3% Pinot Meunier, also incorporates 34% vins de réserve, showcasing the house’s signature style. - Yohan Castaing

The NV Brut Royale Réserve, base 2019, is rich and effusive right out of the gate. Soaring aromatics meld into a core of ripe orchard fruit, with pretty tropical accents that develop with a bit if time in the glass. All the elements are so well-balanced, especially for a Champagne that has only recently been disgorged. The blend is 67% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay and 2% Meunier. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Comprising 44% wine from the 2021 vintage and 56% reserve wines held in perpetual reserve, Philipponnat’s NV Réserve Perpétuelle Brut—formerly known as Brut Royale Réserve—opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe peach, red berries, pear and pastry. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, broad-shouldered and textural, delivering a generous, enveloping style energized by racy acidity. While the base vintage is vinified primarily in stainless steel, the reserve wines are stored in oak, and the wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation.
