Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has a beautifully focused, mineral-laced character and impeccable balance. The tannins are serious yet integrated, and this profound wine will require a decade of patience and should evolve gracefully for three decades or more. Drink 2033-2063.

Remarkably soft on the palate for La Landonne, it doesn't have the same austere impact at this stage as a more classic vintage. Tannins are soft, ripe and not as intense as usual, but it does have length and ripe black fruit, with a graphite element to the tannins. Acidity is on the low side, as is the alcohol. From parcels planted at different times with an average age of 40 years.

Brooding and complex, the 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne has developed splendidly since I last tasted it from barrel one year ago. Fresh violets, stemmy subtleties, pencil shaving, black cherry and crushed rock notes are all dialed up. A slice of orange rind adds another aromatic layer. Textural intrigue seduces in this muscular and meaty red, with a well of black currant and plum, plus plenty of smoky depth. Chalky in feel, with black pepper and lavender details, including bitter plum pit at the end. Stays focused throughout despite its ripeness, and the tannins are sturdy yet fine-grained, with smoldering graphite underpinnings. There's a lot of power, but elegance too. The 2022 La Landonne from Domaine Rostaing is a fine young bottle of Côte-Rôtie in the making. Like all of Pierre Rostaing’s top wines in this vintage, the La Landonne has a firm chassis of tannin that will have to be waited out before the wine starts to drink with generosity. It delivers a refined aromatic constellation of cassis, pepper, coffee bean, hung game, stony soil tones, black olive, incipient notes of hazelnut, a discreet touch of cedar and a very smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, chewy and shows off outstanding depth at the core, with fine soil transparency and grip, firm tannins and fine balance on the very long, structured and promising finish, At least at this early stage, this looks likely to need a few years longer in the cellar than the Côte Blonde before it will start to drink well.
