I loved the 2022 Château Latour A Pomerol. This deep ruby/purple-hued beauty is all Merlot, harvested from the 1st to the 8th of September, that's pulled from eight hectares of deep gravelly and clay soils. Red and black fruits, truffly earth, spicy oak, and graphite, as well as a beautiful sense of minerality, all shine here, and it's concentrated and medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This brilliant Pomerol is hard to resist today, yet I suspect it will have 2-3 decades of overall longevity. It's the finest vintage from this château I've tasted.

A ripe and opulent Latour a Pomerol, aromas of currants and raspberry puree following through to a medium body. This has a firm and silky palate from fine tannins that frame the luscious fruit nicely. Juicy finish. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. Drink after 2028.

Intense aromatics on the nose. This is smooth and succulent but also tense and straight. Tannins have a soft fleshiness to them that comes across as slightly chalky on the palate with edges of heat, toast, clove and cedar spice that just detract slightly from the clarity of the fruit which is dark and focused on blackcurrant and prune with an undercurrent of cooling mint. It's serious in terms of flavours but has a finessed texture. One that feels extremely young and not yet quite settled. Power is undeniable alongside some Pomerol seduction so when the flavours meld a little more this will be lovely.

(TWI 93-95 points) Deep garnet-purple in color 2022 Latour a Pomerol sashays out with graceful notes of raspberry coulis, chocolate covered cherries, and stewed plums, leading to wafts of forest floor, iron ore, and wild sage. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegantly played with graceful, ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness supporting the nuanced red and black fruits, finishing on a mineral note. Showing better in the bottle than it did in barrel with just a swirl or two, it is easy to find all the flowers, licorice, chocolate, plums, and cherry blossoms in the aromatic profile. On the palate, the medium-bodied wine is soft, lush, creamy, and sweet. The fruits are fresh, and elegant in the mid-palate, through to the finish. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot. This really does strike the right balance between intensity, concentration and juiciness, certainly marked by the vintage in terms of its power and kick of rosemary and cloves, but there is beautiful juiciness behind it, and plenty of black cherry and damson fruit, grilled cherry pit on the finish, with aniseed and liquorice. One that shows there is a big difference in Pomerol this. year between terroirs and winemaking choices. Medium in body, the 2022 Latour à Pomerol is a linear wine built more on aromatic expressiveness and persistence rather than size. The vegetal quality it showed en primeur is absent today. Warmed black cherry compote and melted licorice notes meld nicely with the singed bay and alder hints throughout. A savory, peppery edge emerges on the finish, lending some rusticity. Well-built for cellaring. Best from 2026 through 2036. - JM
