From Torrijo de la Cañada, the 2022 Mataquemada Parcelas Singulares was fermented with about 40% whole clusters. Cherry and delicate pomegranate scents meet herbs, strawberry and rosemary. The palate is dry and agile with juicy freshness and a compact structure. Slate-like tannins frame the 2022 before its red-fruited finish. Floral and nervy, with aromas of ginger, dried flowers and red berries. The palate is medium-bodied, deeply saline and persistent in an elegant way, with delicate yet vivid fruit. Very chewy, but delivered with precision. 85% garnacha blended with other varieties. 33% whole bunch. Planted in 1970, from a tiny 0.95-hectare parcel. Drink now or hold.

The old-vine Garnacha 2022 Mataquemada is from the village of Torrijo de la Cañada, a marginal and wetter zone of Calatayud closer to Soria, from a plot planted with a field blend of 90% Garnacha with some Bobal and Garnacha Blanca. It fermented with 40% whole bunches and matured in two Flextank eggs for 18 months. This is pale, elegant and delicate, with a very elegant nose of aromatic herbs (thyme, rosemary), Asian spices, pollen, wild berries and flowers. I visited the vineyard, and the wine expresses well the high altitude (950 meters), the wildflowers and herbs in the field and the stony austerity of the slate soils. It's a style between 2020 and 2021, very characterful and different, to me every bit as good. It has 13.8% alcohol with a pH of 3.33 and six grams of acidity, balanced and tasty, clean. 1,483 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.- Luis Gutiérrez
