This has the ripe and generous fruit that we expect from this Beaune, but also touches of blood oranges and summer flowers. Succulent red fruit with an excellent structure of fine tannins and lively acidity on the medium-bodied palate. Wonderful freshness in the positively firm finish. From a vineyard with southwest exposure, hence the name, which means facing the sunset. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Unfiltered. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

(92-94 points) The 2022 Beaune Aux Coucherias 1er Cru was picked just before the September heat waves and made with 65% whole bunches. It certainly has some of the most flattering aromatics amongst Champy's 2022, with upfront, vivacious Morello cherries, wild strawberry, bergamot and sous-bois scents soaring from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, quite citric in style, with touches of marmalade and tangerine infusing the red fruit on the finish. This represents a worthy follow-up to the previous vintage.

(90-93 points) A fine even purple. There is a greater volume of fruit compared to the Pommard and while the bouquet demonstrates clearly the alpine strawberry note of the whole bunches, there is a solid weight of red berry fruit underpinning. There are some tannins here but they don’t interfere with the quality of ripe supple fruit across the palate, which maintains adequate tension. Boris thinks another six months in wood will firm the wine up further.
