Another beautifully textured, ripe, sexy wine from the Gracin family, the 2022 Clos L'Eglise comes from deeper clay soils on the upper plateau in Pomerol. Blue fruits, ripe black raspberries, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and truffly earth notes all shine here, and this beauty is full-bodied and has a layered, plush, sexy style that's already hard to resist. Nevertheless, it will evolve for 25+ years if well stored.

(95-97 points) The 2022 Clos L'Eglise, 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It features straight-laced, classic scents of warm black plums, blueberry preserves, and cedar chest, leading to suggestions of iron ore, Sichuan pepper, and fertile loam. The full-bodied palate is wonderfully bright and pure, with fresh black fruits and earthy accents supported by very firm, very ripe tannins and finishing long and mineral-laced. 1.5 ha of Merlot is being replanted, so there is a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc this year, which really lends a shine to the wine! pH 3.75.

The 2022 Clos L'Eglise is made from 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, after a swirl or two, notes of plum preserves and wild blueberries erupt from the glass, giving way to hints of dark chocolate, lavender oil, camphor, and anise. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with fragrant black fruit layers, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and minerally. A stunning Pomerol.

Rich, lush, full-bodied, and deep, the wine is filled to the brim with layers of perfectly ripe, sweet, fleshy, dark red pit fruits, licorice, chocolate, espresso, and truffles. Unctuous, as well as energetic, with ample lift on the palate and a hint of salt that slides in at the end of the lengthy finish, this is simply fabulous. The wine blends 70% Merlot with 30% Cabernet Franc, making this the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever used in the blend, a trend I hope they continue. Drink from 2027-2055. Excellent depth and complexity here with a savory, meaty element on top of the mass of dark fruit, graphite and grilled herbs. A subtle touch of fish broth makes it more attractive. Well-structured but precise and fine in terms of tannin texture, this has medium to full body and a plump, consolidated finish. Give it more time to open up. Drink from 2027. The 2022 Clos L'Eglise Is quite the powerhouse. It offers up copious inky dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, new leather and licorice. The richness of the year is very much in evidence in this full-throttle, opulent Pomerol. Of all of Garcin's wines, Clos L'Eglise is the most marked by the conditions of the growing season. Concentrated, quick build up of tannins through the palate, clear complexity and nuance, this is an enjoyable wine with the Pomerol magic of being approachable soon and yet with the sructure to age for decades. (WA 91-93 points) Offering up aromas of sweet cherries, berries, spices and new oak, the 2022 Clos l'Eglise is medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with a velvety attack that segues into a vibrant, rather structured mid-palate, concluding with youthfully firm tannins. Incorporating fully 30% Cabernet Franc this year, this is a strong effort, albeit a touch on the liberally extracted side for such a concentrated vintage. - William Kelley
