The 2022 Riesling Forster Kirchenstück Grosses Gewächs is the warmest site in Deidesheim, a clos with a sandstone wall on weathered limestone with basalt inclusions. An initial flicker of pineapple disappears again, and only slight suspicions of citrus remain on the closed nose. The palate is salty and has a zesty concentration, slowly imbued with creaminess and riper fruit. That lovely sense of zestiness stays right until the slightly longer finish. This has an intense mirabelle and Amalfi lemon character, but also a citrusy austerity that we don’t associate with this site. Almost steely at the long, structured finish. Hard to know how well this will develop. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
