The 2021 Barolo La Tartufaia offers a bit more textural depth than the other wines in the range. Hints of espresso, macerated wild cherry, dried flowers, herbs, menthol and licorice begin to open gradually. Soft, pliant contours wrap it all together. Beguiling and persistent fragrances of sandalwood, mocha and cherry lead to undertones of wet forest flora and alpine herbs on the lively, lithesome palate. Sandy-textured tannins are speckled throughout, coming together in a graceful grip. The fruit is juicy and sapid. The least expensive and most approachable in the range, though not without signature tension. Referencing the estate’s rich truffle hunting ground, La Tartufaia is the lowest parcel (still a lofty 460m) looking west towards the imposing snow-capped Alps.
