(90-93 points) Aromas of cool white orchard fruit, floral and soft spice wisps are trimmed in subtle wood. The sleek, intense and solidly voluminous flavors exude evident minerality on the equally austere and lemon-tinged finale that exhibit very fine length. Solid quality here in a package that should also reward up to a decade of keeping.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain 1er Cru veers much more toward an austere style of Puligny. The aromatics will appeal to those who prefer more Zen-like aromas, touches of petrichor and damp, loamy soil. Returning after 15 minutes, I appreciate its nuances more. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity. The oak is deftly used here, lending a sensorially satisfying texture without occluding the terroir expression. It feels reassuringly persistent on the finish. Promising. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. -- Neal Martin
