(95-97 points) The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru includes 40% whole bunch and was matured entirely in new oak. With intensity on the nose, this is more floral than the Clos-de-Bèze, touches of violet infusing the red fruit alongside light aniseed aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very harmonious with impressive weight and an irresistible silky texture on the persistent finish. Beautiful. Just one barrel was produced this year due to millerandage and then stress.

(93-96 points) 30% whole bunch vinification, and aged in 100% new wood. Very intense fresh purple. Very rich and ripe, confit of sundried cherries with a light peach sauce. Very succulent with considerable length, not heady even if a little jammy, but the persistence pulls out very well. It may well be that the Musigny will refine and reinforce its structure during the rest of the elevage, but for the moment it is a little too much on the lush side to show its true grandeur.

(92-95 points) An exuberantly spicy and floral nose combines notes of exotic tea with those of black cherry and raspberry along with a suggestion of sandalwood. The delicious, refined, intense and sleekly muscular flavors possess only average density but I very much like the texture and particularly so on the complex, stony and strikingly persistent finish. The Clos de Bèze is lovely but there is another dimension present here.

There is an appealing savoury quality to the Musigny from Drouhin-Laroze that has an almost gamey edge to it, accenting the ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit. The texture on the palate is bright and fresh, with abundant concentration and a lingering floral finish. There was just enough fruit to do two barrels in 2020, using 20% whole clusters, fermented gently with just a couple of punch-downs at the end of fermentation. Both barrels were new, but one was changed out after racking to reduce the influence of the wood. (Drink between 2028-2060)
