The 2020 Griottes-Chambertin is also outstanding from Pierre-Jean Roty, but right now it is showing just a touch more extravagant ripeness than the breathtaking Mazy. The bouquet is deep, complex and vibrant, offering up scents of black cherries, black raspberries, smoked meats, chalky soil tones, lovely spices, woodsmoke and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and powerful in personality, with bottomless depth at the core, good soil signature, ripe, chewy tannins and a long, complex finish.

The 2020 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is sensual and perfumed, bursting from the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, rose petals, sweet spices and licorice. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a velvety attack that segues into a layered, concentrated mid-palate, it concludes with a long, floral finish. - WK

This is also aromatically very ripe with similar liqueur-like aromas though here they are spicier and less sauvage in character while displaying a hint of old leather. The notably more concentrated flavors brim with sappy dry extract that are at once muscular, powerful and refined before culminating in a hugely long and very firm finish where, in much the same fashion as the Mazy, hints of wood, bitter chocolate and warmth appear.

The 2020 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with violet and incense infusing the intense black and blueberry fruit, touches of liquorice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, very well integrated oak, lots of panache here with a sweet spicy, pain d'épices finish. Very long. Not a subtle Griottes but one to cellar down for several years (at least). - Neal Martin
