This is pure, racy and enticing, hosting aromas and flavors of black currant, blackberry, violet and iron. This is about finesse, grace and precision balance, with saturated fruit flavors persisting on the superlong aftertaste. Needs a decade in the cellar. Best from 2028 through 2050. 47 cases imported.

(93-96 points) Touches of bitter chocolate and kirsch are present on the spicy aromas of plum, violet and soft wood. The finer if not denser flavors possess a velvety texture while also coating the palate with dry extract on the dusty and chalky finish that is likewise youthfully austere. I very much like the depth and persistence and this beauty should also age gracefully for as long as most anyone would like.

The Grivot family owns 0.84ha of Echézeaux, mainly in Les Cruots. The grapes are entirely destemmed and given a cold soak before gentle fermentation on native yeasts. The wine is pressed and aged in cask (40% new). The result shows impressive elegance yet is in no way lacking fruit, with a lovely, expressive black cherry and pomegranate quality. The texture is delicate, yet there is impressive concentration, and the red fruit and floral notes linger on the finish.

Bright purple, but with a strain of something awkward on the nose. A significant volume of quite juicy fruit, but dry to finish. Maybe it’s the style of oak. Popcorn reductive. In fact, happy to accept it is clean but the oak is a little bit fighting the fruit at the moment.

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a relatively straightforward bouquet that lacks the complexity of its peers. It's too reductive and worsens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, here only slightly reduced, solid with lightly spiced red fruit, though the finish feels a bit blunt, possibly due to the SO2 and the oak. Give this a couple more years.
