A subtle application of wood sets off notes of roasted plum, warm earth and dark cherry liqueur-like aromas. The supple, rich, concentrated and mouth coating flavors are caressing but powerful before culminating in a clean and dry, in the best sense, if slightly warm finish that delivers outstanding length for a villages-level wine. Recommended.

90+ The 2019 Gevrey villages bottling from Domaine Roty is very tasty. The bouquet is deep and black fruity, offering up scents of cassis, black plums, smoked meats, dark soil tones, espresso and a bit of spicy oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely sappy at the core, with good focus and grip, ripe, chewy tannins and a long, well-balanced and promising finish. This is a bit more structured out of the blocks than any of the Marsannays and will need some bottle age to blossom, but it will be a very good bottle in due course.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village reveals inviting aromas of cassis, black tea, sweet spices, licorice and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, supple and lively, with melting tannins and an ample core of fruit, it concludes with a saline finish. The charm and immediacy of the vintage is on full display. - WK
