Picked in the very early morning of January 21 with 35 helpers, the 2018 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Eiswein Violettlack is the first ice wine produced here since 2008. The nose is very clear and zesty, with lemon and precise quartzite aromas that remind me of stone dust. The palate is very elegant and delicate but smooth, with less acidity (5.5 grams per liter) than Stefan Doktor and ice wine nerds were hoping for. However, the finish is long and fresh, even piquant and very precise. Bottled with 7% alcohol and 235 grams of residual sugar, this could have been a TBA as well. Tasted in August 2019.
