The 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese (Golden Capsule) is complex and mineral on the densely woven yet fresh and crunchy-herbal nose. It's a dense, concentrated, piquant and structured Spätlese with lush and ripe fruit whose sweetness is nearly completely absorbed by the Würzgarten raciness and iron-rich terroir character. Fresh strawberry and lime on nose and palate are coolingly laced with mint. There is a seductively sorbet-like inner-mouth impression of creaminess allied to delicacy and refreshing juiciness, with ideally judged sweetness. The bell-clear finish is soothing yet infectiously juicy as well as invigoratingly tangy in its subtle evocations of lime peel and strawberry seeds. A cooling reprise of mintiness and a mouthwatering influx of marine salinity bring this mouthwatering performance to its close, having engendered an irresistible desire to take the next whiff and sip. -- David Schildknecht
