From 0.25ha, next to Truffière, replanted in 1956 for the first time since phylloxera. Pale colour with a slight lemon-green tint, the nose offers a small touch of noble reduction. Quite discreet in the front half, then opens out beautifully thereafter with good flesh, and the usual impeccable acid balance. Very long finish. Tasted: September 2018.

(91-94 points) This is arguably the most elegant wine among the Ente 1ers with its cool, pure and airy nose of lemon peel, lavender, apple, floral and soft spice nuances. There is lovely concentration to the seductive but precise medium-bodied flavors that flash plenty of minerality on the saline and strikingly persistent finish that flashes a touch of bitter lemon-lime character. This too should reward up to decade of cellaring.

The 2017 Champ Gains from Monsieur Ente is another beautiful wine in the making. Like the Referts this year, the Champ Gains is utterly classical in style and proportion, offering up a lovely bouquet of white peach, apple, fresh almond, chalky soil tones, white lilies and a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and very refined in personality, with excellent soil signature, a very good core of pure fruit, zesty acids and fine focus and grip on the long and complex finish. Just beautiful Puligny.

(93+ points) The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ-Gain is deeper, more concentrated and more introverted than the Referts, revealing scents of citrus oil, fresh peach, honeycomb and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with chalky dry extract and lively acids. This has turned out very well in bottle.- WK
