The 2017 Barolo Cerretta is a dark, mysterious wine. Black cherry, lavender, sage, mint and licorice bring out a darker, more muscular side of Nebbiolo. Firm, driving tannins add to an impression of gravitas and power. Even with all of its tannic clout, the Cerretta is endowed with terrific balance and class. This is impressive. -- Antonio Galloni

Menthol, tar and grassy aromas obscure the beam of cherry and berry fruit that graces the palate in this succulent red, which is solidly built, with assertive tannins guarding the long finish. Best from 2025 through 2045. — B.S.

Wild strawberries and raspberries on the nose with lots of dry-stone and heather notes. Full-bodied, firm and almost chocolatey on the palate with very fine tannins. Bitter-herb notes, too. Needs time for the nose and palate to unify into a single, more complex expression. Best from 2023.

With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Ca' Rome' 2017 Barolo Cerretta is textured and rich, keeping in line with the characteristics of the vintage. You get dark cherry and baked plum with plenty of spice, tilled earth and even a touch of truffle oil. The vintage heat takes away from the freshness of the aromas, but this wine is amply textured and persistent. About 8,000 bottles were made.- ML
