(95-97 points) The 2016 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru was poured before the Griottes-Chambertin for the first time. It has a perfumed bouquet with dark berry fruit, black tea, woodland scents and touches of spice emerging with time. The new oak here is seamlessly integrated and frankly I could never tell that this was raised entirely in new wood. There is something a little introverted here, though that is often the way with this grand cru from barrel. The palate is very sensual and beautifully balanced. The tannins are particularly fine here, understated at first but wait because there is a gentle wave of dark berry fruit and mineral-driven notes on the finish that fans out with style. This is a fabulous Chapelle-Chambertin, alas just one-and-a-half barrels this year.

The Chapelle-Chambertin is fabulous, bursting with aromas of ripe red cherry, dried ceps, liquorice and grilled meat, framed by new oak. On the palate the wine is intensely concentrated, its rich, chalky tannins cloaked in a deep core of fruit, its finish long and penetrating. This is the most overtly structural wine in the Dugat cellar this year, and more vertical in contrast to the expansive Charmes.

(91-93 points) A pretty and attractively perfumed nose features notes of plum, dark raspberry and touches of earth and wood spice. The round and velvet-textured flavors possess good volume and a bit more concentration while exhibiting a more elegant mouthfeel and particularly so on the lingering finish that flashes a hint of bitter cherry pit. This isn't quite as structured as the Charmes but it will still need at least 6 to 8 years to begin drinking well.

(91-93 points) Bright, dark red. Complex scents of cherry, pomegranate, licorice, spices, minerals and menthol. A bit broader and sweeter in the mouth than the Charmes-Chambertin, boasting excellent intensity to its dark berry and crushed rock flavors. Quite closed at this stage but the firm tannins avoid dryness and finishing stony minerality stimulates the salivary glands. This wine is likely to evolve very slowly. - Stephen Tanzer
