(91-93) A highly expressive nose offers up aromas composed by the pure essence of red cherry, raspberry and freshly turned earth wisps. The lacy and lilting flavors possess a highly refined mouthfeel that is enhanced by the notably fine-grained tannins that also serve to shape the moderately firm, balanced and sneaky long finish. A classic example of the appellation.

Fine fresh purple colour. A beautifully balanced classy nose, some white pepper behind, the fruit is beautifully interwoven. Ripe but balanced, medium depth but retains considerable elegance. But there is a little bit less there than some of the others. Tasted: September 2019.

(91-93 points) The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru aux Combottes includes 30% whole bunch fruit and is matured in 20% new oak. It was showing some reduction on the nose although peering through, one can see pretty red berry fruit lying in wait. The palate is medium-bodied with quite rounded tannin and confit-like fruit, a rich and quite ambitious Combottes that leaves traces of salted licorice on the aftertaste. This has great potential but it will require time in bottle. Patience required.- Neal Martin
