Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru has a glorious bouquet with red and black fruit, sous bois and pressed rose petal aromas that seem to flourish in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red berry fruit laced with white pepper and orange peel. I appreciate the cohesion and length of this grand cru, one filled with panache to the last sip. This is a brilliant performance from Taupenot-Merme and it totally outclassed the Charmes-Chambertin tasted alongside. Tasted September 2017.- Neal Martin

Medium deep red with a touch of evolution. Quite firm fruit on the nose, which shows up as a firmly structured intensity on the palate, plenty of new oak, and a rich dark strawberries and cream fruit profile. Very Charmes, I thought, though it is actually Mazoyères! DIAM 10

(94+) The 2014 Mazoyères-Chambertin from Romain Taupenot is equally refined as the Charmes, but more black fruity in personality, as is typical of this bottling. The superb bouquet delivers a complex constellation of sweet dark berries, black plums, espresso, bonfire, dark soil tones, vanillin oak and a distinct topnote of currant leaf. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very refined on the attack, with lovely mid-palate depth, ripe tannins and a long, tangy and nascently complex finish. (Drink between 2025-2075)

A ripe yet distinctly cool and ultra-fresh nose combines notes of various red berry fruit scents, earth, herbal tea and a soupçon of animale. There is excellent cut and punch to the notably muscular and intense middle weight plus flavors that are well-balanced, impressively long, complex and harmonious. Note well though that this is very firmly structured and will need plenty of time to fully mature.

Sweet berry and spice flavors are a result of fruit and oak in this broad, expressive red. Plump and juicy enough, presenting a solid base of tannins. A few hours of aeration reveals earth and tobacco accents that shade the cherry fruit. Best from 2020 through 2035. 16 cases imported.-BS
