(95+ points) The brilliant 2012 Rauzan-Ségla is unquestionably one of the successes in the Médoc in 2012. Its still youthful ruby/purple color is followed by impressive notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, cedar, graphite, and some earthy, underbrush-like nuances. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced, it builds with time in the glass and has plenty of tannins as well as length. While it offers pleasure today, it’s going to benefit from another 4-5 years of bottle age, and it should be long-lived.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Rauzan-Segla is a tad closed to begin, soon unfurling to reveal notes of dried sage, iron ore, and fertile loam over a core of blackcurrant jelly, kirsch, and Ceylon tea. The medium-bodied palate delivers fantastic intensity, with firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and lifted.

Inky purple in colour, deep and concentrated, on the palate this is full of cocoa bean, chocolate shavings, rich concentrated damson and plum fruits. Impressive, still young with the barest hiint of tertiary favours, this remains gourmet and succulent. I would give two to three hours in a carafe before drinking if approaching any time soon, and will age further. John Kolasa director.

94+ The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla (54.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 1.5% Petit Verdot) is a classic Rauzan-Ségla, still relatively backward and tannic, but concentrated and extremely promising. Dense blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit along with some licorice, vanilla, foresty notes and spice are all present in this full-bodied yet structured and big, beefy style of Rauzan-Ségla . It may turn out to be somewhat atypical for this château in its size and masculine structure, but this is impressive wine, and one of the great successes of the vintage. This firmly structured, beautifully crafted wine has a solid backdrop of tannins and plenty of concentration. Beyond that, it is already well balanced, bringing together its dark texture and blackberry fruit flavors with generous acidity. It needs to age, drink from 2020.

The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla just comes across a little flat on the nose compared to the previous two wines. Mint-infused red fruit, allspice and a touch of liquorice, though a second bottle at the Bordeaux Index horizontal showed more chutzpah. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine depth, a toothsome Margaux with a dense, more muscular finish that should see it repaid with further cellaring. A toasty, fleshy style, with a cocoa note pulling and pushing the core of blackberry, black currant and plum fruit. Picks up more range through the finish, with black tea, alder and loam accents, boding well for cellaring. Best from 2016 through 2024. – JM
