Just a knock wine that has everything an aged white Bordeaux needs. It is rich, full bodied, long, complex and loaded with perfectly ripe, yellow citrus, rocks, stones and just a hint of honey. Rich wonderfully concentrated wine with ripe apricots green plums touches of toast riding over a structure that is just beginning a long aging process. Give this wine 10 years. This is the last vintage under this name. From 2009 the wine has been rebaptized Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc.

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. I loathe tasting this blind because it always teases you with its laconic nature, waits for you to deliver your scores and then bursts open. The 2008 did exactly that, prompting several scowls from the audience. Initially, the nose is very closed, but it eventually opens to reveal lovely aromas of beeswax, wet wool, dried pear and honeycomb. The palate is similarly dumb at first, but it unfurls with a delicate, citrus entry, a carefully planned crescendo of dried pineapple, lanolin and spice, with hints of hazelnut on the finish. I hate you Laville. Don’t even attempt to taste this blind, but cellar for twenty years.

The last vintage of Laville Haut-Brion (its name was changed to La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc in 2009) is a blend of 79% Semillon and 21% Sauvignon Blanc revealing lovely lemon blossom orange marmalade candle wax honeysuckle and hints of smoky oak. Full-bodied and capable of lasting 20-25 years it is a sensational dry white. -Robert Parker

The 2008 Laville Haut-Brion was the final vintage produced under this label. Despite that, like every other vintage, the 2008 remains stubborn and backward on the nose before deigning us with Conference pear, smoke and light wet wool scents, not unlike a Chenin Blanc! The palate is well balanced, with fine density, an undercurrent of hazelnut and hints of dried pineapple that segue into a gorgeous, again, quite nutty finish. It just needs more time. - Neal martin

Very pure and fresh with lots of mouthwatering quinine and kiwifruit framing the core of yellow apple heather blanched almond and green plum. Very long. Needs a little time in the cellar to blossom. This will be the last vintage for this label; it changes to Château La Mission Haut-Brion starting in the 2009 vintage. Drink now through 2015. -JM
