From a 20 acre vineyard planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on 2/3 gravelly/clay soil and 1/3 clay/silt soil. A very aromatic nose revealing attractive notes of raspberry dark earth smoke and tree bark. With a smooth and sweet entry this has a great presence of fruit on the palate and superb balance. Quite rich with good weight length and complexity there is a bit of chocolate and oak on the finish.

Having just written an estate profile of Château Latour à Pomerol, where I mentioned that I had not tasted the 2008, but was certain that it would prove to be an excellent vintage for this fine estate. A couple weeks later, lo and behold, I cross paths with a bottle of the ’08! The wine is indeed excellent, offering up a fine nose of black cherries, plums, dark soil tones, cigar wrapper and a nice touch of smoky oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and tightly-knit, with a fine core, ripe, moderate tannins, good acids and lovely focus and grip on the long, pure and youthful finish. This is a bit behind the 2008 Corbin in terms of development and will need a bit longer in the cellar before it blossoms, but it should prove to be an excellent wine.

Dark ruby at the core with a bright ruby rim. On the nose classic Bordeaux aromas emerge displaying cinnamon cedar strawberry and coffee. Very structured the wine is balanced with bright acidity and chalky tannins while red and black fruit dominate the palate leading to the finish that is long and clean. Decant this lovely wine for several hours if consuming now or wait a few years and enjoy from 2014-2030+.

Probably a sleeper of the vintage the medium to full-bodied pure 2008 reveals notes of almond paste intermixed with black currants sweet cherries caramel and mocha as well as an attractive texture and density. Consume it over the next decade.

With its solid dark tannins wound around ripe black stone fruits the wine shows an almost sweet character in its richness. The classic acidity of the year powers through the tannins and the fruit giving greater complexity. R.V.
