This is a grain whisky made up of corn, wheat, and unmalted barley. The "Coffey" refers to a specific type of rare column still the folks at Nikka imported from Scotland way back in 1963.

Grain whiskies are rare but it seems they are slowly entering the market as of late. Most distilleries produce grain whiskies for their blends. Here, they've aged them and are releasing them into the wild to stand on their own. And this one surely does. It's almost bourbon - like. There are flavors of toffee, burnt sugar, hints of spice. It's difficult to wrap your head around initially, but well worth the effort.
