2003 Giuseppe Quintarelli - Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
"Aged for a minimum of six years, Quintarelli’s Amarone is in a league of its own. No other producer in the Veneto makes wine like this except perhaps for Dal Forno, who credits Giuseppe with being his mentor. There’s terrific weight to this wine, and yet it comes across as almost Burgundy-like (grand cru of course). Teeth-staining briery fruit with hints of sour cherry, orange peel and roasted meat abound. This wine is the ultimate culmination of savory and sweet spice, ripe fruit and complex aromatics." -SFWTC Staff
"Tasting this legendary wine is unforgettable--indeed the Holy Grail of Italian reds! The 2003 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico is a beautiful and emotional experience. Gloriously elegant, richly textured and flowing with layers of complexity, it is also subtle and graceful. While many Amarones exhibit an over-the-top ripeness, Quintarelli's is something of a marvel. While mouth-filling and lush with typical notes of plum, raisin, raspberry, figs and cedar, it also reveals a staggering array of detailed aromas, including dried roses, porcini, bitter chocolate, game, red currants, cigar, and spice. Surprisingly fresh and masterfully crafted, it is a classic that lives up to the legend and the hype." -Kerry Winslow, SFWTC
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
"The 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a wine that aptly honors the legacy of its maker. The vintage was super hot, but careful cluster selection before appassimento means you never feel that extra warmth. In fact, this wine is exceptionally balanced and polished. It lasts many long minutes thanks to enduring notes of polished stone, candied berry, balsam spice and medicinal herb. They enlighten the palate like the golden streak of a comet on a midnight sky. Drink 2014-2028."
