2010 Clos Lalfert - Vin de Pays de l'Herault Rouge
Wine Advocate: 89 + Points
"Run by the young, Burgundy-trained Baptiste Lalfert, Clos Lalfert is a tiny estate (just over 1 hectares) that lies about 10 miles north of Montpellier, outside the town of La Boissiere. He produces a single red, with his first vintage released in 2007. Looking at his 2010 VDP Herault, it’s a seamless, elegant effort that checks in as a blend of 90% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Carignan that spent 12 months in 25% new barrels, followed by 8 months in stainless steel. Showing plenty of cedar wood, spices and tinges of vanilla, with solid cassis and blackberry-styled fruit, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness and depth, good texture, and firm tannin. It needs another year or so to completely integrate its oak (hopefully), yet should have upwards of a decade of total longevity."
