Nestled in the hills above San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood, the San Francisco Wine Trading Company has been a Bay Area landmark since 1976. Like any good story about wine, ours is one of family, hard work, and constant evolution. One could argue that the last four decades have been among the most dynamic in the history of the wine business. Whether it’s the widespread conversion of farming practices from conventional to organic, the consolidation of liquor houses, the blossoming of artisan importers, or the fluctuation of three economic booms and recessions, Gary Marcaletti has seen it all.
Gary got his start in the wine and spirits business in the early 70s, working for Tower Market. A few years later, he opened up a wine and liquor store called “Mr. Liquor” on Taraval and Funston Streets in our present day location. By the late 90s, as customers began gravitating more to wine than to liquor, we expanded our fine wine selection and decided to reinvent ourselves. The San Francisco Wine Trading Company was born!
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff cultivates long-term relationships with customers from all over the United States, helping them make informed buying decisions. Having access to both California’s incredible array of wineries and a sophisticated import market has given us the opportunity to curate one of the city’s best selections of fine wines and rare spirits. With both a local and national customer base ranging from everyday wine drinkers to serious collectors and Master Sommeliers, we have big expectations to meet! Unlike many wine stores who have a sole buyer, we source our wines and spirits by consensus. Our knowledgeable team represents a broad spectrum of palates, and we believe a democratic process assures the best products for our customers and allows us to accommodate all budgets and tastes.
Our quality offerings are almost entirely comprised of artisan, boutique, and family wineries, because we believe in the family farmer and we only want to sell you wines that we would drink ourselves. But fine wine does not have to be expensive, which is why we always offer the best pricing possible. Most importantly, we focus on cultivating a loyal clientele, so whether you need help planning a party or wedding, are looking to build a personal wine cellar, or would like to order something special that we don’t currently offer, we are happy to help.
Our store hosts weekly wine tastings on Saturdays from 2:00-5:30pm and on Sundays from 2:00-5:00pm and often coordinates special events with local eateries. If you are ever in San Francisco, please be sure to visit us—we’d love to meet you!

Meet Our Team
Gary Marcaletti - CEO, Owner & Head Hancho
Gary Marcaletti is the blood, sweat and tears behind the San Francisco Wine Trading Company. Having started the company as Mr. Liquor in 1976, he's spent his career adapting and shifting the business, relaunching as the company as SFWTC in the 90s. A stalwart in both the West Portal and wine communities, Gary has a regular clientele and a loyal following. It isn't often that he can be found outside the store, but when he is, he's up in Sonoma or sharing food and wine at the table with family and friends. He can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Julia Marcaletti - Wine Buyer
Bay Area native and long-time Francophile Julia Marcaletti has spent her career in wine, food, and the hospitality industry. Before signing on with SFWTC, Julia worked for Air France, Westin Hotels, and Francis Ford Coppola Winery. As our wine buyer, Julia is responsible for sourcing some of the finest wines from around the world, and planning our well-attended weekend wine tastings. While a rotating cameo of talented winemakers, importers, and distributors keep Julia's palate busy, she prefers to drink the wines of Loire Valley and Southern Rhône--that is, unless she can get her hands on a rare bottle of Masseto from Tuscany! For help ordering any of our wine selections, or information on our marketing or special events, please contact email@example.com.
Fred Tocchini - Spirits Buyer
Fred Tocchini was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Being the son of a winemaker exposed Fred to the nuances of taste and place early on. Prior to working for SFWTC, Fred spent ten years in real estate, fine tuning his sales experience enough to realize it is best used in the wine and spirits business, his lifetime pursuit. Since coming on board in 2010, Fred has become our spirits buyer, shipping manager, and resident spirits and beer expert. Fred's motivation (and possibly caffeine intake) often has him flying between the warehouse and the spirits room at mach speeds, so when he's at home, he enjoys taking a load off listening to reggae and sipping rye Manhattans up, garnished with sweet Luxardo cherries. For help ordering one of our rare spirits, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Michelle Pepitone - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Michelle Pepitone has spent the majority of her life in Marin County, within arm's reach of both wine country and San Francisco's vibrant restaurant scene. When her first career in the mental health field left her disheartened, a cool glass of Prosecco and a good conversation with her dad moved her in the direction of the wine and spirits business. Soon after, she started working in both restaurants and wine retail, and she's been a member of the SFWTC team since 2002. Although the majority of her free time is spent in volunteering as an ESL tutor and sourcing wines for charity organizations, Michelle loves to cook, invent new cocktail recipes, and sip on crisp white wines and earthy reds. For assistance ordering wines or spirits, please contact email@example.com.
Kerry Winslow - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Kerry Winslow hails from California's beautiful Monterey Peninsula, due north and south of some of the finest wine regions in the United States. It's no surprise that his passion and enthusiasm for wine has been a life-long pursuit. Over the years, Kerry has worked for wineries, restaurants, and fine wine merchants from everything to sales, marketing, management and buying, giving him insight into the many aspects of the business. His love of wine and travel has also lead him to Italy and Germany, where he's had the chance to visit and taste with growers. When he's not touring local wineries here in California, Kerry can be found on the soccer field. For any information about German, California, or Italian wines, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sarah Small - Office Manager & Bookkeeper
Sarah Small grew up in Redwood City and has spent her career wearing many hats in office administration. In addition to handling all billing and payments for SFWTC, Sarah spends her time putting out fires and keeping the rest of us organized. The family atmosphere here at the store is what initially attracted her to the team, and she spreads her sunny disposition wherever she goes. When she’s not adding to the caloric intake of the team with her irresistible baked goods, Sarah moonlights in her parents’ carnivorous plant store in Half Moon Bay, listens to live music, and enjoys barbecues and small batch bourbons. For billing questions, please contact email@example.com.
Suzanne McKee - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Suzanne McKee grew up in Southern California near Santa Barbara and spent her summers on a ranch in Oregon. She was first introduced to wines nine years ago, when first attending our weekly tastings here at the store. Suzanne now lives the good life in Santa Cruz, where she manages a bed and breakfast during the week. On the weekend, however, Suzanne runs the show at the SFWTC Wine Bar, where she enjoys educating customers, pouring wines, and pairing delicious cheeses with them. Trying new wines is one of her favorite parts of the job. Lately, she's been hooked on the Arbin Mondeuse from the Savoie...which, of course, pairs exceptionally well with cheese!
Austin Saladin - Wine & Spirits Consultant
Growing up in Napa's picturesque town of Saint Helena introduced the wine world to Austin Saladin at a very young age. After having worked in the tasting rooms of artisan wineries like V. Sattui, Merryvale, and Castello Amorosa, Austin became enamored with the business. In addition to speaking fluent Italian, Austin studied Business Administration and Marketing, earning his degree from San Francisco State in 2013. We're pleased to finally have his skillset on our team full-time now. While Austin is naturally partial to the wines of Napa and Sonoma, he also loves Spanish and Italian wines. In fact, he's been known to tuck a bottle or two into his backpack when he goes hiking in Yosemite or out wake boarding with friends. For more information about ordering wines and spirits, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Charlie Shanahan - Warehouse Manager
Charlie Shanahan is the newest member of our team and already is standing out as our best dressed. Known to wear a sport coat, vest, tie, and Ray Bans when making deliveries or coordinating shipments, this dapper San Francisco native believes that 'life's too short not to dress up.' Charlie is responsible for our warehouse, shipping, and deliveries, and takes care of our customers' cellars here at SFWTC. While eager to learn about wines and spirits, Charlie is more of a lager man, himself, but is opening his taste buds to new experiences. His positive attitude is contagious. On weekends, Charlie can be found hanging out with friends listening to live music in the park, hiking, or hanging out on the beach.
