Deep garnet-purple in color, the single-varietal 2021 State Lane Vineyard Grand Vin Cabernet Sauvignon storms out of the glass with powerful notions of creme de cassis, plum preserves, and baked blackberries leading to hints of candied violets, Indian spices, and forest floor with a touch of garrigue. The full-bodied palate is chock full of black fruit and savory layers, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and a lively line, finishing long and fragrant. This is beautiful and should be incredibly long lived. 350 cases were made.

All Cabernet Sauvignon from two blocks on the estate, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin spent 20 months in 92% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels, and Napa Valley doesn t get any classier. This beauty is inky hued and displays a pure, powerful, full-bodied style in its cassis and black raspberry-driven fruit profile as well as notes of tobacco, graphite, spicy oak, and espresso roast. The purity is off the charts, it's concentrated, flawlessly balanced, and has incredible length. This gem deserves 5-7 years of bottle age and will have 30-40 years of overall longevity.

(95-98 points) The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon base blend, is a wild, exotic wine. Inky blue fruits, crème de cassis, chocolate, licorice and lavender infuse the 2021 with striking inner sweetness and tons of aromatic intensity. The Cabernet emerges from the poorest soils on the estate. That, coupled with the naturally low yields of the year, produced an unctuous, unusually hedonistic wine at Kapcsándy. That said, this is a base blend, and not the final wine. - Antonio Galloni

(94-96 points) The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard is a blend of two Cabernet Sauvignon parcels, both planted to Clone 191. Marked by classic scents of pencil shavings, cassis, cherries and gentle herbal nuances, it's full-bodied, rich and velvety on the palate, with a long, dusty, firm finish. Given the superb showing of the 2018 (made from higher yields), I suspect my rating may be conservative. - JC
