The 2020 Dão Tinto from António Madeira is made from vineyards planted on granite soils, with the parcels planted to classic field blends that include up to thirty different grapes! The wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged in older Bordeaux barrels for a year and a half prior to bottling, without fining or filtration. The wine has a beautifully complex nose of black cherries, dark berries, a hint of menthol, black tea, a bit of smoked meats, stony soil tones, cigar smoke and just a touch of cedar from the older casks. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a superb core of fruit, fine soil undertow, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, impressively balanced finish. This is approachable now, but deserves at least a handful of years in the cellar to soften up its backend tannins a bit more. First class Dão!
