The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Sunset Block emerges from one of the newer parcels planted during the large redevelopment here that started in 2014. It shows a bit more brightness and energy than the main Cabernet bottling, with all of the vertical structure and overall intensity that is such a signature at Mayacamas. At the same time, the Sunset Block shows an elegant side of the property that is so alluring.

Spiced cherries, blackcurrants, walnuts, currant leaves, ground cloves and hints of cigar box on the nose. Some graphite, too. Medium- to full-bodied with compact, velvety texture and fresher, dark-fruited character. Hints of wet stones, sea shells and iron add a flinty, agile character to the fruit. Balanced and focused. Very long. Better after 2025.

(95+ points) From a block of the vineyard that's rockier than others and gets more afternoon sun, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Sunset is a bit riper and concentrated than the other Cabs here, with plum, cassis and dark chocolate shadings. Medium to full-bodied, it's rich, velvety and long, a wine for the cellar.- JC
